1.       TYPE OF DRUG-Nimesulide
This medication is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug

 

2.       INDICATIONS (USE)- Nimesulide
Its approved indications are the treatment of acute pain, the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis and primary dysmenorrhoea in adolescents and adults above 12 years old.

 

3.       MECHANISM OF ACTION (MOA)- Nimesulide
It works by blocking the production of prostaglandins (a chemical associated with pain) thereby relieving pain and inflammation.

 

4.       ROUTES OF ADMINISTRATION- Nimesulide
Oral & Injectable.

 

5.       ONSET OF EFFECT OR ACTION- Nimesulide
30-60 minutes.

 

6.     DOSAGE (DOSING INFORMATION)- Nimesulide
The usual dose is 100mg twice a day.

Children: 5mg/kg of body weight in 2 or 3 divided doses.

 

7.       HALF LIFE (DURATION OF ACTION)- Nimesulide
8-10 hours

 

8.       ADVERSE EFFECTS OR SIDE EFFECTS- Nimesulide
Gastrointestinal – Abdominal discomfort, heartburn, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

  • Central Nervous System – Headache, dizziness and drowsiness.
  • Genitourinary – Blood in urine, decrease in urination and kidney failure.

prescribed for painful inflammatory conditions, back pain, dysmenorrhea, postoperative pain, osteoarthritis, and fever.

 

9.       CONTRAINDICATIONS- Nimesulide
To severe hepatic impairment.

 

10.   DRUG INTERACTIONS- Nimesulide
Bleeding and peptic ulceration.Theophylline-plasma theophylline levels.Frusemide-reduced oral frusemide bioavailability.

 

11.     EXCRETION- Nimesulide
Renal (50%), fecal (29%)
