|DROTAVERINE is an antispasmodic drug.
|2. INDICATIONS (USE)- DROTAVERINE|
|Drotaverin (INN, also known as drotaverin) is an antispasmodic drug, used to enhance cervical dilation during childbirth.
Smooth muscle spasm, Gastrointestinal colic pain, Renal colic pain, Dysmenorrhoea, Uterine neck spasm.
|3. MECHANISM OF ACTION (MOA)- DROTAVERINE|
|Its antispasmodic effect is mediated via inhibition of phosphodiesterase-IV , specific for smooth muscle. It has rapid and direct action on the smooth muscle spasm and pain.
|4. ROUTES OF ADMINISTRATION- DROTAVERINE|
|Oral and Injectable.
|5. ONSET OF EFFECT OR ACTION- DROTAVERINE|
|6. DOSAGE (DOSING INFORMATION)- DROTAVERINE|
|Adults-40-80 mg thrice daily.
Children-1-5 years 20 mg 3-4 times daily
6-12 year-40 mg thrice daily
|7. HALF LIFE (DURATION OF ACTION)- DROTAVERINE|
|8. ADVERSE EFFECTS OR SIDE EFFECTS – DROTAVERINE|
|It is free from CNS side effects, addiction, dyness of mouth,blurring of vision and blood dyscrasias. Free from gastric irritation.
|9. CONTRAINDICATIONS – DROTAVERINE|
|Glaucoma,paralytic ileus,benign prostat hyperplasis.
|10. DRUG INTERACTIONS – DROTAVERINE|
|May attenuate the action of levodopa. Concurrent use of analgesics, antimuscarinics or benzodiazepines. Additive beneficial effect with concurrent use of analgesics, antimuscarinics or benzodiazepines.
|11. EXCRETION- DROTAVERINE|
|>50% in urine and ~30% in bile
