 Cefuroxime

Cefuroxime 1

1.       TYPE OF DRUG- Cefuroxime
Cefuroxime is an enteral second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.

2.       INDICATIONS (USE)- Cefuroxime
For the treatment of many different types of bacterial infections such as bronchitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, ear infections, skin infections, gonorrhea, and urinary tract infections.

3.       MECHANISM OF ACTION (MOA)- Cefuroxime
Cefuroxime, like the penicillins, is a beta-lactam antibiotic. By binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, it inhibits the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Cell lysis is then mediated by bacterial cell wall autolytic enzymes such as autolysins; it is possible that cefuroxime interferes with an autolysin inhibitor.

4.       ROUTES OF ADMINISTRATION- Cefuroxime
Injection Route,Intravenous Route.

5.       ONSET OF EFFECT OR ACTION- Cefuroxime
30minuts -1 hour

6.      DOSAGE (DOSING INFORMATION)- Cefuroxime
750 mg ; 1.5 g ; 7.5 g ; 250 mg ; 500 mg ; 125 mg ; 125 mg/5 mL ; 750 mg/50 mL-5% ; 1.5 g/50 mL-5% ; 250 mg/5 mL.

7.       HALF LIFE (DURATION OF ACTION)- Cefuroxime

Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

10.   DRUG INTERACTIONS – Cefuroxime
Probenecid decreases renal clearance of cefuroxime.

Potentially Fatal: Nephrotoxicity with aminoglycosides and furosemide.

11.   EXCRETION- Cefuroxime
Via the urine by glomerular filtration and renal tubular secretion (as unchanged); via bile (small amounts); 70 minutes (elimination half-life); prolonged in neonates and renal impairment.
