 ARTESUNATE

Artesunate 1

1.       TYPE OF DRUG- ARTESUNATE
Artesunate (AS) is a medication used to treat malaria.

 

2.       INDICATIONS (USE)- ARTESUNATE
For the treatment of severe malaria.

 

3.       MECHANISM OF ACTION (MOA)- ARTESUNATE
In a hematin dependent manner, artesunate has been shown to potently inhibit the essential Plasmodium falciparum exported protein 1 (EXP1), a membrane glutathione S-transferase.

 

4.       ROUTES OF ADMINISTRATION- ARTESUNATE
Injection

 

5.       ONSET OF EFFECT OR ACTION- ARTESUNATE
Within 30 minuts.

 

6.      DOSAGE (DOSING INFORMATION)- ARTESUNATE
Falciparum malaria

Adult: 2.4 mg/kg via IM or IV admin. Repeat 12 hr and 24 hr later, then once daily thereafter.

Child: 2.4 mg/kg via IM or IV admin. Repeat 12 hr and 24 hr later, then once daily thereafter.

 

7.       HALF LIFE (DURATION OF ACTION)- ARTESUNATE
3-4 hours.

 

8.       ADVERSE EFFECTS OR SIDE EFFECTS – ARTESUNATE
latulence, Dizziness, Headache, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Fever, Abdominal pain, Rashes, Itching, Hair loss.

 

9.       CONTRAINDICATIONS – ARTESUNATE
Hypersensitivity

 

10.   DRUG INTERACTIONS – ARTESUNATE
Antimalarial potentiating action seen with mefloquine, primaquine and tetracycline. Additive effect with chloroquine. Antagonistic effect with pyrimethamine and sulphonamides.

 

11.      EXCRETION- ARTESUNATE
Urine.
